Distribution Points

A distribution point is a critical component of an electrical system, essential for the precise and uniform distribution of electrical energy throughout the grid. It is designed to operate at a voltage of 0.4 kV in various settings—residential, commercial, and industrial.

Advantages and Functions of the System

Distribution points (DPs) offer a number of advantages:

  • reliability—they ensure a stable and reliable power supply by preventing overloads and reducing the likelihood of failures;
  • energy savings—they optimize electricity usage, leading to significant energy savings;
  • flexibility and scalability—they allow the system to be adapted to various customer needs.

A distribution cabinet performs a number of functions:

  • receiving electricity from the upstream source;
  • distributing electricity to consumers;
  • protection against overloads, short circuits, and leakage current;
  • metering of electricity consumption.

Every system is manufactured from high-quality materials, ensuring its durability. The average service life is 25–30 years.

Classification of Distribution Points

Distribution points are classified in several ways:

  • by functional purpose:
    • cabinet-type distribution point—includes various electrical panels that distribute electricity to individual consumers or devices, as well as circuit breakers, fuses, indicators, and control elements;
    • automatic transfer switches (ATS)—designed to automatically switch over to a backup power supply during a main grid outage, ensuring uninterrupted system operation;
    • service distribution panels (SDPs)—housing main disconnect switches, electricity meters, and protective devices, these panels establish the main service entrance point for electricity into the building system.
    • main distribution board (MDB), distribution panel (DP), floor distribution panel (FDP), etc.
  • by installation location:
    • internal distribution points—located inside buildings or structures and providing electricity distribution within the facility;
    • outdoor distribution cabinets—installed on streets and designed to distribute electricity in open areas;
  • by degree of automation:
    • manual—the system is operated manually without automated control systems;
    • automated—equipped with automated control systems that provide more efficient and precise power distribution;
  • by purpose:
    • for residential buildings—equipped with metering devices and individual consumer protection;
    • for industrial enterprises and complexes—typically larger in size, with high capacity and a complex structure.
  • by mounting type:
    • surface-mounted—housed in a metal or plastic enclosure and mounted directly onto the wall surface.
    • flush-mounted—integrated directly into a distribution panelboard or wall cutout.
  • by protection rating:
    • IP20—for indoor installation (dry environments);
    • IP31—for indoor installation in areas prone to condensation or dripping water;
    • IP54—for outdoor / weather-resistant installation.

Choosing a specific type of electrical distribution cabinet depends on the specific needs, system characteristics, and facility requirements. For example, a flush-mounted distribution cabinet is suitable for small facilities, while a power distribution point can be used for industrial facilities.

Design Features of Distribution Cabinets

The distribution cabinet features a metal or plastic enclosure with a modular configuration system, allowing for easy assembly and disassembly. Inside the cabinet are:

  • main incoming circuit breaker (Main Disconnect)—protects the main incoming line against overloads and short circuits;
  • backup power circuit breaker—protects the incoming line from the auxiliary power source;
  • automatic transfer switch (ATS)—automatically transfers the electrical load to the backup source during a utility outage;
  • generator auto-start control module—triggers the automatic startup sequence for a standby generator when grid power is lost;
  • protective devices—standard branch circuit breakers, ground fault circuit Interrupters (GFCIs / RCDs), and RCBOs (combination overcurrent and ground-fault protection);
  • busbars—heavy-duty busbars for internal power distribution and cable terminations;
  • metering equipment—utility or sub-metering electricity meters;
  • auxiliary equipment—voltage monitoring relays, capacitor banks, and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.

The rated voltage of the panel for residential and industrial facilities is 220/380 V; for industrial facilities, it is 660 V. The frequency is 50 Hz, and the rated current depends on the power rating of the distribution point. The type of input device is a disconnect switch or a circuit breaker. All other specifications and features of the panel will depend directly on the specific equipment configuration and technical requirements.
