Packaged Transformer Substation (PTS)
A PTS is a factory-assembled packaged transformer substation that integrates advanced control and protection systems, power transformers, and switching mechanisms to ensure uninterrupted power grid operation. This modular system is essential for voltage transformation, power distribution, and energy metering. It provides a reliable power supply to industrial and agricultural facilities, civil infrastructure, residential buildings (apartment complexes and single-family homes), and construction sites.
Packaged substations are also widely used in the oil and gas industry and single-family residential developments.
Their modular construction ensures high structural durability, mechanical resilience, and reliable operation across diverse climatic conditions. The prefabricated transformer substation is designed for three-phase AC power systems.
Components of a Packaged Transformer Substation
Packaged transformer substations consist of the following main components:
- a transformer for voltage conversion;
- switchgear cells for power distribution;
- power cables for connecting the substation to the power grid and consumers;
- control, protection, and alarm systems—to ensure uninterrupted operation and personnel safety;
- cooling systems—to dissipate heat from the transformer and other components;
- ventilation systems—to supply fresh air and remove warm air from the substation;
- fire suppression systems—to ensure fire safety within the substation.
All of these are housed within several compartments. Most commonly, these include:
- transformer compartment—houses the power transformer;
- switchgear compartment—houses the switchgear cells, switching devices, and protection and control systems;
- auxiliary equipment compartment—houses the heating, ventilation, lighting, and other auxiliary systems.
Packaged transformer substations (PTS) can be equipped with oil-filled transformers—which are more affordable and suitable for smaller facilities—or dry-type transformers, which offer greater environmental friendliness and a higher level of fire safety. Dry-type transformers are best suited for large-scale facilities.
Block-type systems are designed for both outdoor and indoor installation. All equipment is housed within block-type structures. Rated power ranges from 10 kVA to 2,500 kVA, with voltage ratings of up to 35 kV.
